See your tip amount and total with tip. If sales tax is enabled, your breakdown will also show the tax amount. If you're sharing the bill, you'll see the tip and total per person.
To calculate a tip, multiply your bill subtotal by the tip percentage and divide by 100.
For example, if your bill subtotal is $50 and you want to leave an 18% tip:
$50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $9
Your tip is $9, bringing the subtotal plus tip to $59 before sales tax.
This example calculates the tip before tax. To calculate it on your subtotal plus sales tax instead, select Subtotal + Sales Tax (After Tax) in the calculator.
Here's what different tip percentages add to a $50 subtotal, before sales tax.
| Tip Percentage | Tip Amount | Subtotal + Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | $7.50 | $57.50 |
| 18% | $9.00 | $59.00 |
| 20% | $10.00 | $60.00 |
| 25% | $12.50 | $62.50 |
For more bill amounts and tip percentages, see our Tip Chart.
The difference comes down to the amount you use to calculate your tip.
Before tax: Your tip is calculated on the bill subtotal.
After tax: Your tip is calculated on the subtotal plus sales tax.
For example, on a $50 subtotal with $4 in sales tax, a 20% tip is $10 before tax or $10.80 after tax. In both examples, the $4 sales tax is added to the final bill. Only the tip amount changes.
Our calculator uses the pre-tax subtotal by default. You can choose the after-tax option if you prefer to calculate your tip on the amount including sales tax.
For a more detailed comparison, read our Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Tipping guide.
Sharing a bill? Enter the number of people paying, and the calculator will divide the total evenly.
For example, if the bill comes to $60 after tax and tip, three people sharing it would pay $20 each. The calculator also shows how much of the tip each person contributes.
If you're paying on your own, leave the number of people at 1. The total will remain yours, with no split to work out.
